How does it work?

  1. 1Type the phone number, preferably in international format with the country code.
  2. 2Write the message that should appear ready to send, for instance a keyword or a short request.
  3. 3Adjust colours, size, margin, module style and error correction, and add a logo if you like.
  4. 4Scan the preview with an iPhone and an Android phone if you can, then download PNG, SVG or PDF.

What is SMS QR Code?

The code contains an SMSTO: payload in the form SMSTO:+15551234567:Your message. When it is scanned, a compatible camera or scanner app opens the messaging app with the number in the recipient field and the text in the message box. Nothing is sent until the person presses send.

Support is not identical everywhere. The SMSTO: format is widely recognised by Android scanners, while other phones and scanner apps may handle it differently, so test on the devices your audience uses. Standard message rates from the sender's carrier apply.

When should you use it?

  • Running a keyword campaign where people text a word such as JOIN to a shop number.
  • Letting a customer confirm an appointment or delivery by sending a pre-written reply.
  • Putting a text-us shortcut on a van, shop window or business card.
  • Collecting quick votes or contest entries at an event without typing a long number.

Privacy

This tool runs in your browser. What you type, paste or open is processed on your device by JavaScript and is not sent to our servers, stored or shared. Your data stays on your device.

The number and message are encoded in your browser and are not sent to a server. Anyone scanning the code sees both, so use a business number you are happy to publish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the message send by itself?

No. The scan only prepares the message. The person still has to press send in their messaging app.

Which number format should I use?

Use the international format with a plus sign and country code, for example +212612345678, without spaces or dashes. A number written without a country code only works for people in the same country.

Will it work on every phone?

Not necessarily. Behaviour depends on the phone and on the scanner app. Test with an iPhone and an Android device before printing. If a phone does not open the message, people can still read the number and text on screen.

Can the message be long?

Keep it short. Long texts make the code denser and harder to scan, and very long messages may be split into several SMS by the carrier.
