What is EAN-8 Barcode Generator?

EAN-8 is the compact member of the EAN/UPC family, also known as GTIN-8. It holds eight digits: a GS1 prefix that identifies the numbering agency, an item reference and a final check digit. The symbol is 67 modules wide: a start guard, four digits, a centre guard, four digits and an end guard. It is meant for products whose packaging is too small for a 13-digit EAN-13, such as pens, lip balms or confectionery.

Unlike EAN-13, an EAN-8 is not built from your own company prefix. In most countries these short numbers are allocated one by one by the national GS1 organisation, so a number you invent may already belong to another product. Use this generator for artwork, tests, or when you already hold an allocated number. Compared with UPC-E, which is a zero-compressed form of a 12-digit UPC-A, an EAN-8 is a stand-alone number and cannot be expanded into a longer code.

When should you use it?

• Your product is too small to carry a full EAN-13 label.
• Your GS1 member organisation assigned you an EAN-8 number and you need the artwork.
• You want to check that an EAN-8 read from existing packaging has a valid check digit.
• You are testing a point-of-sale or inventory system with sample short codes.

How the EAN-8 check digit is calculated

Multiply the first seven digits by 3, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3 from left to right and add the products. The check digit is the number that brings the total up to the next multiple of 10 (0 if it already is one). Example: for 9638507 the sum is 27 + 6 + 9 + 8 + 15 + 0 + 21 = 86, so the check digit is 4 and the full code is 96385074.
