How does it work?

What is QR Code Image Decoder?

A QR code image decoder does the same job as a phone camera, but it starts from a file instead of a live view. The picture is analysed by the ZXing library running in your browser: it locates the three corner squares, reads the pattern of dark and light modules, applies error correction and returns the text that was encoded.

What you see depends on the content. A web address is displayed in full before anything opens, a phone code offers a call, an e-mail code offers a message, and a Wi-Fi code shows the network name, the security type and the password, which stays hidden until you reveal it. Any other content is shown as plain text you can copy.

Reading from an image is often more reliable than pointing a camera, because there is no focus, glare or hand shake to fight. The limit is the picture itself: the modules must still be distinguishable, so a tiny or heavily compressed thumbnail may fail.

When should you use it?

  • Someone sent you a QR code as a screenshot and you cannot scan the screen of the phone that is showing it.
  • You want to see where a printed flyer or poster points before anyone scans it: photograph it, then decode the picture on a computer.
  • A PDF or slide contains a QR code and you exported the page as PNG or JPG.
  • You need to recover the network name or password stored in a saved Wi-Fi QR code.
  • Your computer has no webcam, or the camera permission is blocked.

Image or camera: which should you use?

Use this page when the code already exists as a file, a screenshot or something you can paste. Use the QR scanner when the code is printed on a wall, a product or a screen in front of you and you want to read it live with your device camera.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which image formats can I use?

Any picture your browser can open, typically PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP. Screenshots pasted from the clipboard work too. For a PDF, export or capture the page as an image first.

Why does it say that no QR code was found?

The picture may be too small, blurred or low in contrast, or the code may be cropped so that a corner square or the blank border is missing. Try a larger, sharper version and crop tightly around the code while leaving a white margin.

Can it read barcodes such as EAN or Code 128?

This page is designed for QR codes. For EAN, UPC, Code 128, Data Matrix and other formats, use the barcode image reader.

Is it safe to open the decoded link?

The tool never opens a link on its own and shows the whole address first. Still, look at the domain carefully: a code can point to a look-alike website, and the tool cannot judge whether a destination is trustworthy.
