How does it work?

  4. 4For EAN, UPC and other GTIN codes, check the message telling you whether the check digit is valid, then copy the value.

What is Barcode Scanner Online?

This scanner reads EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec and QR Code. It uses the open source ZXing library compiled for the browser, so no app has to be installed and no image is sent to a server.

For retail formats built on GTIN numbers (EAN and UPC), the last digit is a check digit. The scanner recomputes it and reports whether the value is valid, which quickly reveals a misprinted code or a partial read. For other formats it shows the raw decoded content.

Camera access in a browser works only on secure pages (HTTPS) and after you give permission. Scanning quality depends on light, distance, focus and print quality, and no scanner can promise to read every damaged or low-contrast code.

When should you use it?

  • You want to know what number is encoded in a product barcode, without a dedicated scanner.
  • You printed a barcode and want to test that it can be read before producing a whole batch.
  • You need to check whether a code from a supplier has a valid check digit.
  • You have a screenshot or photo of a barcode and want to extract its value.
  • You need to read a Data Matrix or PDF417 that a phone camera app ignores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which barcode formats can it read?

EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec and QR Code. Formats are detected automatically, so there is no need to select one first.

Why is my barcode not detected?

Try more light, avoid glare and reflections, hold the phone about 10 to 20 cm away and keep the code flat and parallel to the camera. Curved packaging, tiny bars or faded print can prevent a read. Photographing the code and uploading the image sometimes works better.

The camera does not start. What should I do?

Check that the page is opened over HTTPS and that you allowed camera access in the browser and system settings. Close other apps that may be using the camera. You can always scan an image file instead.

What does an invalid check digit mean?

The last digit of the code does not match the others. The barcode may be misprinted, partly damaged or read incompletely, or the number was typed wrongly when the label was made. Try scanning again and compare with the printed digits.
