What is UPC-A Barcode Generator?

UPC-A (Universal Product Code) is the 12-digit GTIN-12 printed on retail products in North America. Its digits are a number-system digit, a five-digit manufacturer prefix, a five-digit item number and a check digit. The symbol is 95 modules wide, with six digits on each side of a centre guard, and the first and last digits are normally printed outside the bars. Number system 0, 1, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are used for regular items, 2 for random-weight goods, 3 for pharmaceuticals (NDC), 4 for in-store use and 5 for coupons.

UPC-A is identical to an EAN-13 with a leading zero: 036000291452 is the same product as 0036000291452. Modern scanners read both, and many systems store the UPC-A padded to 13 or 14 digits. Company prefixes are issued by GS1, so do not invent numbers for goods you intend to sell, because they may already belong to someone else. Use this generator for artwork, tests and demos, or once you hold your prefix. Where a package is too small for UPC-A, the compressed UPC-E is the usual alternative.

When should you use it?

• You sell in the US or Canada and need the artwork for a product whose UPC-A you already own.
• A retailer or marketplace asks for a UPC image to go with your listing.
• You want to check a UPC-A typed from packaging before entering it into inventory.
• You need sample barcodes for training material or software tests.

How the UPC-A check digit is calculated

Add the digits in odd positions (1st, 3rd … 11th), multiply that sum by 3, add the digits in even positions (2nd … 10th), and take the number that brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. Example: 03600029145 gives 0 + 6 + 0 + 2 + 1 + 5 = 14, times 3 is 42, plus 3 + 0 + 0 + 9 + 4 = 16 makes 58, so the check digit is 2 and the code is 036000291452.
