What is SSCC-18 Barcode Generator?

An SSCC, or Serial Shipping Container Code, is the GS1 identifier of one logistic unit such as a pallet, a roll container or a shipped carton. Unlike a GTIN, which identifies a product type, an SSCC identifies one physical unit, so every pallet you ship gets its own number. The number has 18 digits: a one-digit extension chosen by the company (0 to 9) to increase capacity, the GS1 company prefix (7 to 10 digits), a serial reference that fills the remaining space so the first three parts total 17 digits, and a final check digit.

The check digit uses the GS1 modulo-10 rule: weight the 17 digits alternately 3, 1, 3, 1 from the left so that the rightmost data digit has weight 3, add them up and take the number that brings the sum to the next multiple of ten. On a label the SSCC is encoded in a GS1-128 barcode with Application Identifier (00), so the barcode holds 20 digits, and the human-readable line reads (00) followed by the 18 digits.

On the GS1 logistic label, the SSCC barcode is normally placed in the lower section, and GS1 guidance for pallets puts the label roughly 400 to 800 mm above the floor so scanners can reach it. The SSCC is also carried in electronic messages such as the despatch advice (ASN), so the warehouse can link the physical pallet to the order data. Do not reuse the number within your own system for at least a year.

When should you use it?

• You ship pallets or cartons to retailers or distributors that require an SSCC on each logistic unit.
• You are testing a warehouse system by scanning sample pallet labels.
• You need to confirm that an SSCC received from a customer has a valid check digit.
• You produce a sample label to attach to an ASN (despatch advice) test.

SSCC-18 versus the general GS1-128 tool

This page always uses AI (00) and only accepts an SSCC. The GS1-128 generator accepts any combination of Application Identifiers such as GTIN, batch and expiry. On a full logistic label, the SSCC is often printed as its own barcode, with a second GS1-128 line for content data.
